Hi, i’m Michael, now were to start, I guess from the beginning were any good story would start. When I was about 5, I was heading off to bed, and I noticed a old lady walking thru the other room carrying a parrot on a perch. I though nothing of it, because my Grandmother live downstairs from us, and I though she was doing something in the other room. Later on when my mother and I went downstairs to visit, I questioned by Grandmother what she was doing in the other room. She said, she didn’t visit our apartment today, and I described to her what I saw. When I did, I noticed her jaw hit the floor, and she said, you just described my friend who just died a few days ago. Well none the less, she was upset, and did what any good Grandmother would do. Bring you to church and teach you how to pray for your soul, and ask forgiveness. But on the other hand, my other, my other Grandmother wanted to see this first hand, but the only problem was she lived in Ireland, and I lived in New York. The next summer my father bought plane tickets over to Ireland so we can visit the family. You see, the whole family came to the US at one time, then half went back, when I Grandfather retired. The first thing that happened once we stepped off the plane was to be greeted by my Grandparents, and my estranged Aunts and Uncles, then we went out to get something to eat, and next on my Grandmother’s list, was to visit a grave yard.
We walked into the grave yard and my Grandmother looked down and smiled and said, So Michael, tell me what you see. Do you see anybody, or anything strange. I looked around, and didn’t see anything strange. I then grabbed her hand and said, I don’t see anything strange, but the girl over there wants to play hide and seek with me. Can I go over there and play. The look on her explained it all, she just made a Oh with her lips, and nothing came out, and she just dragged me out of the yard, and tossed me into the back seat of the car. When my parents asked her what happened, she only replied, We’re not talking about this in front of the child. The next day, we went touring Ireland’s best breathtaking cemeteries. With the famous question, what do you see. Anyway, moving on once we returned back to New York, my other Grandmother hear what happened, not only did we go to church more, but she also decided I needed to go to parochial school. Moving on. My next trip to Ireland was a little bit more fun this time. Again we stepped off the airplane and was greeted by the family, and we went someplace to eat. This time on the way home, my Grandmother planned another surprise. We stopped at the tinker (Gypsy) trailer village. My mother turned to us, and said, what ever you do, do not open the doors for anyone, except us, or they will kidnap you. Weill she instill the fear into me and the other kids in the car. A little time went by and a old Tinker lady walk up to the car and tapped on the window, and scared us to death, all that was going thru my mind was what my mother said before she left. Then, I noticed my Grandmother behind her, and the Tinker lady was said to her. I can see it in him, you have a special one, he’s going to be a hand full. My Grandmother slipped her some money and she slowly walked away. My Grandmother jumped into the car and started the engine, and I asked were was my mother, and she just smiled, she’s still shopping, and nobody say anything about what just happened. My mother showed up a few minutes later on carrying blankets that she just brought. My mother thank her for bring her there because she was looking all over the place for them and couldn’t find them. She then ask so what did you buy, Oh nothing much, I just got a answer to a question I was wondering about. Then we headed home .
The next day was different, we didn’t visit any grave yards, we just stayed around the house, then at dinner, my Grandmother announced that there was a Bingo at a near-by church, and would we be interested in going. My mother’s eyes light right up, something to do, besides watching TV, and then she turned to me, what about you Michael, want to keep me company at Bingo. What could I say, but yes. Shortly after dinner, we jumped into the car and sped away to the church. My Grandma, brought me a half a book, and she purchased a full book for both, her and my mother. We worked our way inside and took our seats, and she sat between us, and gave us a crash course on playing Bingo. Well as luck has it. I won. That summer will be remembered as the great Bingo Tour of Ireland. The first thing she did, was to make up a scheduled on were and when and how much. Now I didn’t always get the jackpot, I hit 2nd and 3rd the majority of the time. But my Grandmother was working it like Al Capone. After a while, she started to noticed the same people at the hall, so she was smart, and move me, her lucky rabbit foot onto something different, the penny casinos. Now when I was a kid, I didn’t understand what she was doing, but when I look back now, I know she was just fostering my gifts and letting them grow. The reason why is because at one time, she use to read tea leafs, but she was threatened by the local church, if she didn’t stop, she would be excommunicated. (Will finish this long story another day, hope you enjoyed it so far).
